The Leakey Eagles started their district campaign with a loss to the Utopia Buffaloes 72 to 60. The referees were calling a real close game and we did not adjust to it. We allowed the Buffaloes to shoot 28 free throws. They shoot them well so we put ourselves in a hole at half by 8. Foul trouble did not help but the Eagles were able to trim the deficit by one at the start of the 4th quarter. Things did not go well to start the 4th and the Eagles got down by as many as 16. The Eagles made a furious run and got within one point and that was as close they got. I was really proud of these kids for not giving up. That few minutes in the 4th showed a lot of heart. The Eagles will try to recover against the Comstock Panthers in Comstock. It is a long trip but we hope to see a lot of our fans there. Scoring for the Eagles were Blake Thomasson with 17, Tanner Pannell with 15, Billy Chisum with 10 Emilio Navarro with 9, Marcus Martinez with 7, and Kevin Vasquez with 2. Go Eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The trip to Comstock did not turn out very well for the visiting Leakey Eagles for the first time in my time in Leakey we lost to the Panthers. The Eagles played a very strong 1st half and led by 7. Watching the game I thought that Comstock came out and just played harder than we did, but after watching the film we just went cold from the field. Comstock was able to capitalize on that and turn the game around and win by 6. You have to give them the credit they were able to find a way to keep scoring when we went cold. That brings our district record to 0 – 2. Scoring for Leakey were Blake Thomasson 17, Marcus Martinez 10, Emilio Navarro 5, Tanner Pannell 4 Mark Cangemi 3 and Caleb Thomasson, Billy Chisum, and Drew Shackelford with 2 each. Our next game will be in Knippa and we hope the fans will be able to help the boys turn it around. Go Eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Eagles came roaring back to get back into the playoff picture with a thrilling 55 to 54 victory against the Knippa Rockcrushers. The game started out looking like the visiting Eagles were going to have a long night when Knippa jumped out to a 10-0 lead. After a couple of timeouts the Eagles made 3 three- point baskets and the 1st quarter ended 16 to 9. The Eagles closed the gap to four by half. Knippa made a push and when the 4h quarter started the lead was 12 for the home Rockcrushers. The Eagles showed a lot of character and heart by just not quitting and with less than a minute to go the lead was only one. After a series of miscues by both teams the Eagles ended up with the ball with less than 20 seconds to go. Blake hit a baseline shot with 3 seconds to go for Leakey’s first lead of the night. That moved our record in district to 1 and 2 and put us right back in the thick of things. After the first two losses we barely had a pulse, but with this win the Eagles showed they are not dead yet. Scoring for Leakey were Blake with 19, Tanner and Marcus both had 9, Billy was next with 8, Caleb and Emilio both had 4, and Kevin and Mark rounded out the scoring with 1 each. Come help the Eagles as they travel to Utopia to see if we can keep the magic going. Go Eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Eagles made it two in a row by defeating the Utopia Buffaloes for their second district win. It was a very well played game on both sides. For three quarters the score was either tied or a one or two point lead and it looked like it might come down to a last shot by somebody, but the Eagle were able to make some timely shots and pull away to at one time a ten point lead before finishing with a seven point lead. Our freshmen did a good job for us tonight. We scored 18 points in the fourth quarter and Tanner and Emilio had 8 points each in the quarter. Free throw shooting was a big. We finished the night going 13 of 19 free throws. Our defense was a big difference in the contest. The last time we played we seemed to be moving in slow motion and fouled way too much, and they made 23 free throws. The boys were full of energy and we limited them to only three free throws total. Keeping them off the line was a huge lift for our team tonight. We stayed out of foul trouble and the boys went after every rebound that went up. The Eagles next opponent is the Comstock Panthers and we want the community to come and make it hard for the visiting Panther fans to have a place to sit. Come support your Eagles as they make another run toward the playoffs. Scoring for Leakey was Tanner with 16, Blake with 10, Emilio had 9, Mark had 3, and Marcus, Billy, Drew, and Caleb all had 2 points each. Go Eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
