Leakey Independent School District

Fred R. McNiel, Superintendent

Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed January, 2010, as School Board Recognition Month to help highlight the contributions of dedicated men and women who take the time to care about our local schools. The Leakey Independent School District joins school districts across the state to thank Board members for voluntarily tackling the enormous job of governing local school districts.

“As advocates for our children, School Board members face difficult challenges.  These local citizens, our neighbors, are elected by the community to make critical decisions that directly affect the future of our youth.  They work tirelessly, devoting countless hours to help ensure a quality education that will lead our students to success,” said Fred R. McNiel, Leakey ISD Superintendent.

“Our School Board members are a vital link between the community and the classroom.  They bear responsibility for an annual budget of $3.5 million dollars, over two-hundred forty students,  and sixty employees!  Their job is not an easy one, but they have a commitment to serve their community and ensure that all students are given every opportunity to excel through education.  Help us now show appreciation to these board members for giving of themselves and caring so much about every child enrolled in our schools,” McNiel said.

The men and women serving on the Leakey ISD School Board include: Jerry W. Bates Jr., President; Charlie Reagor, Vice-President; Shawn Gray, Secretary; Shane Hohman, Member; Ruben Navarro, Member; Dub Suttle, Member and Pablo “Beatsie” Rubio, Member.

At the regularly held School Board meeting on January 18, 2010, the Leakey ISD School Board members were publicly recognized and honored by Superintendent Fred R. McNiel and student members of the Student Council. Seven Student Council members presented each Board member with a framed certificate of appreciation and a short sleeve, knit spirit shirt that had the school mascot and school name embroidered over the front pocket of the shirt. Additionally each Board member’s name was embroidered on the pocket of the shirt.

In addition to the certificates and shirts, faculty members prepared snack food and desserts for the Board to enjoy while they were conducting the meeting. Also each Board member was presented with thank you letters and posters written and prepared by elementary students in the school.

We would like to invite the Frio Canyon community members to extend a word of support and encouragement to these outstanding men and women the next time you see them in town at the post office, grocery store or bank! Please let them know that you appreciate what they do for the children in our community! In the photo above the Board members posed for a picture.
